UK awash in EU legislation
Wednesday, 16th June 2010
The European Union has introduced 2756 pieces of legislation in the 12 months since the last European Elections, said UKIP's Nigel Farage.
Returning to Brussels after a short break to recover from a plane crash, the Party's chief spokesman revealed that between last June and the end of May this year, EU officials had pushed through 1355 regulations, 167 directives, and 1234 other pieces of legislation and legislative instruments, almost none of which passed through the European Parliament.
He said: "When people say that the EU is unimportant, or doesn't affect them, it is only because they have not seen the blizzard of legislation which it introduces, and which Westminster duly rubber stamps into British law.
"This is the equivalent of one new piece of legislation every 3 hours of every day, with each one adding a new burden, and a new cost, to life in the UK. No wonder the old parties don't want to talk about the EU."
