National Trust brands wind turbines 'a menace'

Monday, 13th February 2012

UKIP has long been opposed to the creation of wind farms and has always challenged the belief that wind power is an effective form of renewable energy.

Now, Sir Simon Jenkins, chairman of the National Trust, has said he is "deeply sceptical" of wind power, and has described the turbines that blight the countryside as a "public menace".

His comments will be seen as a blow for the government which is steadfastly sticking to its belief that wind power has a credible part to play in meeting Britain's future energy requirements.

Only last week Ed Davey, the new Energy and Climate Change Secretary, opened the world's biggest offshore wind farm off Cumbria last week.

The government has already installed in excess of 3,500 turbines and is planning a further 800 by the end of this year.

The National Trust says that it is continually fighting plans for wind farms that threaten more than 700 miles of coastline and 28,500 acres of countryside.

UKIP believes that wind farms should be subject to democratic local planning procedures with local people being allowed a say through a referendum.

A vote for UKIP means a vote for a political party that is prepared to fight to protect the coast and countryside from the onslaught of ugly, inefficient and expensive wind turbines.

It is also becoming very clear that the government is not as 'green' as it might like the country to think.

As well sanctioning wind farms that are destroying the British countryside, the Coalition government is supporting HS2, the new High Speed rail link between London and Birmingham that will butcher chunks of the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside. The government is also trying to push through planning reform proposals that will see widespread house building on greenfield land.

UKIP is opposed to HS2 and has also been successfully fighting the planning reform proposals, especially in the South East of England.

If you care about protecting the British landscape, then a vote for UKIP is a step in the right direction.
