The UKIP Mayoral candidate in Tyne and Wear has criticised a citizens’ group who refused to allow him to take part in a debate.

UKIP’s Hugh Jackson said comments by organisers of a Tyne and Wear Citizens’ assembly event were ‘insulting and misinformed’.

Several candidates were invited to the event but they excluded UKIP because of concerns about ‘member safety and welfare, given comments and stances your party has put forward on minority groups’ that created a ‘protest and public order risk’.

Regional chairman, Richard Elvin, said: "This is blatant discrimination to justify eliminating views that might challenge their own."
