It has to go down as one of the most bizarre hustings events of all time.
Carl Benjamin, UKIP list candidate in the South West, was the only candidate who turned up. There was no audience, but the event was livestreamed.
The hustings were hastily arranged after the University of the West of England in Bristol pulled the plug on an earlier scheduled event on the grounds that an event involving UKIP’s Carl would present “too high a security risk”.
The Green Party had already said they would boycott the event if Carl was invited. The University Debating Society refused to bow to the pressure but then the University authorities cancelled whole thing.
Student Derya Khalilpour, President of the Debating Society, organised an alternative ‘Not the UWE Debating Society’ event, unaffiliated to the university and students’ union.
Only Carl Benjamin turned up. The other invitees declined to attend.
